Cremation Glass  FAQ

We understand that choosing a memorial piece is deeply personal decision.  To assist, below are answers to the most common questions about our cremation glass paperweights to give you clarity, comfort, and confidence throughout the process.

What is cremation glass (also known as ashes in glass)?

Cremation glass is a handcrafted memorial artwork where a very small portion of cremated ashes (less than one teaspoon) is permanently fused into molten glass. The result is a solid, sealed piece that preserves your loved one’s memory in a beautiful and lasting form.

Is a cremation paperweight the same as a cremation orb?

Yes, they are the same, we call them orb or paperweight interchangeably since people know them by different names.

How do I clean cremation glass?

Generally a wet soapy cloth will do fine, but any method you use to clean glass will work.

Does cremation glass colors fade?

No, we're using colored glass frit and that shouldn't fade noticeably even after decades of being in direct sun.

Where can I find cremation glass orbs and paperweights?

You can find them online, like here at Spirit Pieces, or often at your local funeral home or crematorium.

Each Spirit Piece is infused with a small amount of cremation ashes from your loved one.  To purchase, add to cart and check out.  We'll send you a free collection kit to return the ashes.

Are my loved one’s ashes really inside the glass?

Yes. A small amount of the provided cremated ashes is carefully incorporated into the molten glass during the glass creation process. Once cooled, the ashes are permanently encased within the glass —they are not stored in a compartment or added afterward.  For this reason ashes must be sent into us to be included.

Can you see the ashes inside the paperweight?

Yes.  The ashes typically appear as soft white or light gray swirls, flecks, or cloud-like formations within the glass matrix. The exact appearance will vary depending on the ashes that are submitted and the chosen design.

Will my cremation glass look exactly like the photos?

No two pieces of glass cremation art are ever identical. Each paperweight is individually handcrafted, and variations in ash composition, color blending, and internal glass movement while semi-motion make every Spirit Piece truly one of a kind.

Why are there bubbles or variations in the glass?

Small air bubbles and slight variations are a natural part of the cremation glassmaking process. These are not defects—they are part of what makes each memorial authentic and handcrafted.

How much ash is required for cremation glass artwork?

We only need a very small amount—typically about half teaspoon is requested. This ensures you can keep the vast majority of your loved one’s ashes while still creating a meaningful memorial.

How do I know you’re using my loved one’s ashes?

We follow a strict handling process to ensure respect and accuracy at every step of creation each cremation paperweight/orb. Ashes are carefully labeled, tracked, and handled individually throughout the entire creation process.

Can I include ashes from more than one person or pet?

Yes. We can combine ashes from multiple individuals or pets into a single piece upon request. Many families choose this option to create a shared memorial.

Can pet ashes be used?

Absolutely. We treat pet ashes with the same care and respect as human ashes and they are fully compatible with being incorporated into cremation glass.

How do I send the ashes to include into cremation glass?

After placing your order, you’ll receive clear instructions for safely sending a small amount of ashes to us. This will be sent with your included collection kit, sent out automatically once your order is placed.

What happens after I place my order?
1. You place your order.
2. We send you a collection kit.
3. You send a small portion of ashes.
4. Our artists create your custom piece.
5. Your finished paperweight and any remaining ashes are returned to you.

How long does it take to make cremation glass?

Production times can vary, but most orders are completed within a six weeks from the time we receive the ashes. You’ll be notified once your piece is finished and ready to ship via a shipping notice.

Is cremation glass durable?

Yes. Our paperweights are made from solid, high-quality glass and are designed to last a lifetime. However, like all glass, they can break if dropped or struck with force.

Is cremation glass waterproof?

Yes. The ashes are fully encased within solid glass, making the piece completely sealed and waterproof.  Cremation glass, like all glass, is waterproof.

Can I customize the design of cremation glass?

Yes. We offer a variety of colors and styles, and many pieces can be customized to reflect personal meaning, favorite colors, or symbolic choices.  Each product will detail the customizations available

Can I order multiple Spirit Pieces of the same design in the same order?

Yes. Many families choose to create multiple pieces from the same set of ashes so each person can have a personal memorial.  We even give discounts for family discounts.

What if I send too much or too little ash to make my cremation glass?

If you send more cremation ash than needed, you'll have the option to have it returned. If too little is sent, we’ll contact you before proceeding (but fortunately this is very rare.)

Can ashes be used years later to make cremation glass?

Yes. Cremated ashes do not expire and can be used at any time, even many years later.

What if my cremation glass arrives damaged?

If your Spirit Piece is damaged during shipping, please contact us right away. We will work with you to resolve the issue as quickly as possible. Fortunately, this is a rarity.

Is this a respectful way to memorialize a loved one?

Yes!!!  Many families find cremation glass to be a very comforting and meaningful way to keep their loved one close. Each Spirit Piece is created with care, intention, and respect for the memory it represents and as such it is very appreciated and loved by the recipients.
